Okay, I’m a photographer… and an artist… I have a pretty okay sense of style, and I know what looks good. Have I picked out some cute outfits for my daughter? 100%. And some picture-perfect settings to photograph her in? Of course.
But BY FAR my favorite photos that I’ve EVER taken of her are…
1- Gold lamé coat and goggles. (NEITHER item chosen by me… she was two… and RAN to the coat in Gymboree and REFUSED to let it out of her sight… so (even though my taste was OshKosh denim overalls… NOT shiny gold lamé… I couldn't help but buy it for her.)
2- Sad pink Bat Girl. Hair chalk. DIY make up. Sad, moody pout (totally the opposite from this people-pleasing Pollyanna-of-a-mom who doesn’t wear makeup and also does not wear pink).
3- First day of preschool. I had SUCH a cute outfit picked out for her. But the morning of, she refused to wear it. And insisted instead on this. (“What will they think of me???” nagged at the back of my head as we drove to school… worried I’d be seen as a totally neglectful, incompetent mother to let my child come to school like that.) But she was proud. And she felt great. So I threw back my shoulders and said “It’s not about me”... and look at this priceless memory of this fabulous, confident INDIVIDUAL... blossoming as she forges her OWN unique path!
I LOVE these photos because it shows how different she is. Different. Full of life. Unique. Original. Sparkly. BEAUTIFUL.
You too– in your own way– do not fit the mold. And You. Are. Beautiful.
It's your differences that make you YOU.
Let’s celebrate that.
And honor that.
And POST your beautiful photos proudly so that others might also be inspired to see the beauty in THEIR differences.
Together we can make the world a little bit brighter and a little bit broader.
Let's do this.
